There are many ways to cook campfires, but skewer cooking is the most popular. You can quickly roast a variety of tasty treats on your campfire or firepit with very little equipment and supplies. Although you won't be able to cook every dish on a single skewer, many great basic recipes can be cooked on an open fire using a Skewer.
What are you looking for?
You will need some kind of skewer. That's it! There are no fancy grills, tripods, or other equipment. You can use any length of stick or a skewer that you design.
Which skewer type should you choose?
There are two essential tips:
(1) Use a metal skewer. A wooden skewer can catch fire, especially when it takes longer cooking times.
(2) Make sure you choose skewers with at least two prongs, such as those shown here.
A single prong can cause food to spin and make it more difficult for you to control. You can turn your food quickly and easily with two or more prongs. Some skewers come with additional features. The skewers are pictured telescopes so that they can be stored easily and don't take up too much space in your backpack. These skewers also have a ring that allows you to spin the rod of the skewer with your fingers without needing to spin the whole skewer. It is not required, but it makes the cooking process more straightforward.
What kind of food can you make with a skewer?
Two things to keep in mind when cooking with a skewer. The skewer can't hold heavy items, and it can be tiring to hold the skewer and rotate it over the fire for extended periods. You should choose smaller foods that require shorter cooking times. Season your food the same way you would wood. Salt and pepper can make everything taste better if all else fails. Below are some examples of great campfire cooking food for skewers:
- Sausages
- Hot Dogs
- Small Poultry/Game Birds (Quail, Pigeon Squabs, Partridges, Poussin, Game Hens, etc. )
- You can cut up larger meats like chicken, beef, lamb, and so on. You can make shish-kabobs with larger meats like chicken, beef, lamb, etc.
- Firm-fleshed vegetables: zucchini, squash, onions, potatoes, etc. )
- And don't forget the Marshmallows! For dessert, bring some Graham crackers and chocolate!
How to use a skewer?
It's simple! Simply skewer your food. Make sure you pierce the thickest part of the food. Push it back on the skewer as far and as close as you can. This will prevent food from falling into the campfire. Once your seasoned food has been placed, you can simply place the food near your fire and rotate it until it is cooked to perfection. Important tip: Most foods don't cook well over the flames. The biggest mistake you can make when cooking is to leave your food directly in front of the flames.
This will quickly burn the food's surface to a charred, unappetizing appearance. The outside of the food will turn to coal by the time it is done. Keep your food away from the flames. You don't have to worry about it; as long as you have a hot fire, your food will cook perfectly. Slowly rotate the food to ensure it cooks evenly.
That's it! This is one of the easiest forms of campfire cooking. For quick campfire meals that are easy and delicious, make sure to have your skewer on hand!
